Ovipositing Tibicen canicularis
Wow, this is the first time I've ever known this species to oviposit in dead wood other than the dead wood from a tree branch. Very interesting. Was it up-side-down? You can see its ovipositor inserted in the wood near the end of the abdomen.
Nice shot. It would've been interesting to go back in october to see if any nymphs hatched.
I have documented sitings of
Tibicen lyricens
doing this but no other species, except now.

The actual orientation was with the head facing upwards. The cicada was on the shady side of the post. I took a series of shots and these two were the clearest. I never noticed what it was doing. I just thought it was resting on the side of the post.
