Grammia nevadensis - Apantesis incorrupta

Found several of these at 2 sites in the Santa Rita Mts. Thought they might be Estigmene acrea, but I don't think larvae are supposed to be out this time of year??

We don't see the typical yellow marks on the face
that Estigmene has. What about size? Any estimate? Some smaller similar caterpillars have been placed in Grammia nevadensis, but...

It was
smaller than the Estigmene I've seen. Just looked at G. nevadensis and the life history etc. seems to fit as well as similar-looking larvae. Thanks J&J - you're a dream team!

E. acrea
It looks like (E. acrea) to me, but they're supposed to overwinter as pupa, or in places that are warm enough they're active year round.


Hopefully the Balabans will chime in.
