Grasshopper - Arphia xanthoptera - female

Grasshopper - Arphia xanthoptera - Female
Dixon, Phelps County, Missouri, USA
September 4, 2006
Size: almost 2" long
I found 2 very large grasshoppers yesterday. Both were the flying type but totally different in appearance. They were remarkably calm. Any help in identifying them would be appreciated!

Very nice.
Very nice image of the autumn yellow-winged grasshopper, Arphia xanthoptera. The crest-like pronotum (top of thorax) is diagnostic.

Oedipodinae
This is one of the Band-winged Grasshoppers.

question
Does that mean the black stripe on their papery yellow wings?

Yes
Most members of this subfamily have this. I'm not quite sure which genus you have here but I will try to find out .
