Anglewing Katydid - Microcentrum retinerve - male

Anglewing Katydid - Microcentrum retinerve - Male
Durham County, North Carolina, USA
September 25, 2004
Detail of pronotum. The straight front margin would seem to indicate this is Microcentrum retinerve, according to Helfer's How to Know the Grasshoppers key (1). I'm just not sure, however. Note the thorax modified for stridulation, and the "ears" on the front legs. (Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong on the anatomy and physiology.)

Microcentrum
I usually go by size, which is admittedly unreliable. Retinerve tends to be rather small, though, rhombifolium quite large, especially the females. Don't know how reliable the pronotal margin is, either, as Helfer is somewhat outdated....

OK, size covered
Body length of this invidual about 28 mm without wings, about 42 mm with wings. Photo posted with scale for reference:

M. retinerve it is!
Using the new grasshopper guide, there is no doubt, this is M. retinerve. Great shots!
