Small milkweed bug - Lygaeus kalmii

Small milkweed bug - Lygaeus kalmii
Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
August 11, 2006
Last one - I promise! But this one is the first to show up in my yard with the spots on the wings. All summer - no spots. No abruptly many of them have spots. Hows come? I wouldn't think a new genetic strain would move in.

Spots on the wings
Your post is the easternmost one showing these spots. I did notice two in Colorado, but think it is primarily a western variation of some sort. California is particularly heavy with the spotted guys, plus there are posts in Washington, New Mexico and Arizona. Interesting.

Also
Just found one today in Missouri, no camera handy, but the spots were pretty striking.
