Symmerista caterpillar - Symmerista canicosta

Symmerista caterpillar - Symmerista canicosta
Hawk Mountain, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA
September 30, 2004
I thought this looked similar to some of the symmerista caterpillars. Does anyone know?

Moved
Moved from Symmerista.

S. canicosta
According to the NPWRC, in S.albifrons on the dorsum, the 5 black stripes are even in width with the 4 white stripes, but in S.canicosta the 5 black stripes are wider than the 4 white stripes. That leads me to believe you have a S.canicosta there. Compare to the S.albifrons larva pictures and you can see the difference in the dorsum stripes. I'd say it's safe to move this to the Symmerista canicosta page.

Yes
Looks just like Northern Prairie photo, but better!

But
Wagner (1) page 317 says he cannot tell S.canicosta from S.albifrons
