Beautiful Wasp - Ichneumon ambulatorius - female

Beautiful Wasp - Ichneumon ambulatorius - Female
Basking Ridge, Somerset County, New Jersey, USA
March 29, 2013
I found this beautiful wasp in a rotting log. In the same log there was a hibernating baldfaced hornet queen, and about 756343264732462 sweat bees. This wasp looked stunning against the dark brown background of the rotting log.

Moved
In his 1961 treatment of Ichneumon, Heinrich did not mention that the females of this species hibernate, and the species was not listed in the 1971 Dasch paper on hibernating Ichneumonidae of Ohio. Therefore, this an interesting record.

Moved from Ants, Bees, Wasps and Sawflies.

Ichneumon ambulatorius…
Nice. A female. Hosts include numerous moth larvae.
