Harvester Red Ants - Pogonomyrmex comanche

Harvester Red Ants - Pogonomyrmex comanche
San Antonio area, Bexar County, Texas, USA
September 6, 2006
These appear to be the common Harvester Ants, or as I've always known them as . . . simply Red Ants. Since there are only two types listed in the guide and one is from Florida, is it save to assume this is the other? Just the Pogonomyrmex - Harvester Ant ?
If so, these could be added to the guide for at least 9 months of the year down here in south Texas. (likely more)

Edited to add - by the above statement, I mean that these are active pretty much year round down here except for the brief really cold spurts we have in Jan. & Feb.

Pogonomyrmex
Based on the amount of sand I see in the nest crater and surrounding habitat, there's good chance this could be P. comanche, since barbatus seems to avoid sand in favor of gravelly soil most of the time. Those are usually the only two species as far east as San Antonio, though they get a lot more diverse a bit further west.

They are defintely a Pogonomyrmex species, but one of several which occur in Texas.
