Dragonfly? or something else - Proctacanthus

Dragonfly? or something else - Proctacanthus
Brevard County, Florida, USA
March 16, 2013
Size: approx 2 inches
I found it perched on the side of the fence early in the evening. I am not sure if it is a true dragonfly - it has a very sturdy, stocky build and its wings are folded on its back. It sat still as I took quite a few pictures, then became agitated and finally flew away. Any help with ID'ing is appreciated.

Predator
Robber flies are about as distantly related to dragonflies as any two insects can be, but they share similar habits. Both are aerial predators of smaller insects.

Thanks for that info - I love bugs but my knowledge is limited. I appreciate your comment, it gives me some insight on the Robber Fly.
Thanks again,
Salty

Welcome to BugGuide!

Robber Fly
A big thank you for the welcome. As I am a newb please let me know if there is any etiquette I need to be aware of. Now that I know the name of the insect do I need to rename my picture? Or can I leave the entry as is?
I have a photo blog on WordPress and people are always asking the name of the bugs I take pictures of, one of them actually referred me here. I am grateful to have bugguide as a resource and will credit the site for ID'ing. This is a fantastic community and I thank you again for the help and warm welcome.
Sincerely,
Salty

Regarding the title...
it's your call. You can change the title if you like, or leave it as it is. Eventually, if we're lucky, the image will be moved to a genus or species page, and the latin name will be automatically added to the title.

.
This is a Robber Fly, beyond that I know nothing else.
