Myelopsis alatella - Myelopsis minutulella

Myelopsis alatella - Myelopsis minutulella
Camp Wood Hills, Edwards County, Texas, USA
March 19, 2013
Size: 10 mm
Ed Knudson identified this species for me.

Moved
Moved from Myelopsis alatella.

Very confusing
Ed's ID is confusing--This moth looks nothing like the examples of Myelopsis alatella on MPG or BOLD.

.
Chuck,

I just got the results back from my 2019 BOLD batch. There were two M. minutularia identified to species in it and I will be posting them.

ID Info?
Where are they at BugGuide? Are you referring to BIN BOLD:ADZ1114? I only see four specimens, all yours. Who identified them? The type is from Texas. I suspect BOLD:ADZ1114 is in fact correct and that all those from northern US and Canada at BOLD are bad. But I would like to know how they were identified.

.
The record says this - Identifier Kate Perez - BIN Taxonomy Match (Aug 2019) I put some information on my BG photo .

--
Kate Perez is a BOLD staff member. I'll email her. She may be correct but I don't think she's a specialist in for this family.

.
I can probably try to dissect one to satisfy you. I see them quite frequently and see some good IDing markings like a very horizontally stripped abdomen which often shows just below the wing connection, gray, not beige or brownish coloration, and strong, angled AM line.

I was going to tell you the Myelopsis atella is also identified now with live photographs. I sent two GREATLY differing dissecctions to Tony Thomas because the adults looked so similar. I did not ask for an ID but he identified my male dissection as Myelopsis atella and it is in the recently submitted microplate.

Kate does not profess to be an identifier beyond matching to DNA in their database.

Name change
I think this one should be changed to M. minutularia.

.
I now agree.

.
I am waiting for BOLD to place mine in a BIN, but I have had one identified as Myelopsis alatella

.
I have been calling mine 5719 Myelopsis minutularia but my ID is not confirmed.

Moved
Moved from Moths. Nice photo. This ought to help the guide.
