Wasp and Carolina Grasshopper - Prionyx atratus - female

Wasp and Carolina Grasshopper - Prionyx atratus - Female
Monhegan Island, Lincoln County, Maine, USA
August 31, 2006
Size: about 20 mm
Last year I photographed the red form of Carolina Grasshopper, Dissosteira carolina. This year I had seen what I thought might be the grey form. As I was photographing it, it jumped. At about two feet in the air a wasp hit it. This photo was taken almost immediately after they fell to the ground. After stunning the grasshopper, the wasp did a sort of dance around its victim before dragging it a few inches. I'm thinking it intended to bury the prey. After that, a passerby flushed the wasp and I'd run out of time to wait and see if it would return. The wasp looked to me like a spider wasp but I don't know much about them.
