Identification
Adult: forewing brownish-gray with paler shading in subterminal area; orbicular and reniform spots slightly paler than ground color; black basal and anal dashes, and blackish streak between AM and PM lines near inner margin; AM line pale, jagged, thick, edged with black; PM line pale, scalloped, edged with black; terminal line dark, scalloped, with points of the scallops projecting into the fringe; hindwing dirty white or pale brownish-yellow with dark terminal line
Range
coast to coast in southern Canada and presumably adjacent northern states, south in the east to Georgia
Season
adults fly from August to October
Food
larvae of S. privata feed on leaves of raspberry (Rubus spp.)
