Digrammia californiaria? - Digrammia

Digrammia californiaria? - Digrammia
Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
April 14, 2013
On an overcast afternoon, this moth was flitting about where a grassy area borders coastal sage scrub at the Claremont Colleges' Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station. After looking at moth photos, I wondered if it might be a Californian Granite, Digrammia californiaria Hodges#6380. But I could be way off — there are so many moths! Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Update: Although the reviewer at Butterflies and Moths of North America initially confirmed Digrammia californiaria, he decided after further review that although it may be D. californiaria, he did not feel he could tell it apart from D. delectata, and maybe even D. denticulata.

Not way off ...
Nancy,
This is definitely a Digrammia. While it matches the written description for D. californiaria, but the "broken dark patch about one-third distance from costa along PM line" seems on the weak side for me to be comfortable with. Hopefully, someone more familiar with west coast fauna will know for sure.
Robert

Thanks!
Thanks, Robert! We'll wait for an expert. To me D. californiaria seemed to be the closest match from the photos, but others are similar and can be variable. Some species also have no photos on BugGuide.

Would it be better for getting expert attention to move this to Digrammia? Or Geometridae? Or better to leave it where it is?

leave it for a week or so ...
then move to Geometrid, if you don't get any bites :)

OK
OK, will do. Thanks for the advice!
