Spider love - Neoscona crucifera - male - female

Spider love - Neoscona crucifera - Male Female
Del Mar, San Diego County, California, USA
September 8, 2006
Size: 20mm/45mm
We had this large female spider outside our front door for a while now. The door light provided lots of moth customers for her. Two days ago another large spider showed up around the corner. We did not realize they belonged to the same species until romance ensued last night. He actually survived and now lives a foot away from her net.
The net looks pretty disorganized not orb-shaped, so I am not sure if they are orb weavers. The female hides out in what looks like a small tunnel fitted into a crevice under the roof when disturbed. He just squeezes into a corner. Size on both is about 45 mm acrosss with legs. Her abdomen is about penny sized.
Am attaching two pair shots and one single each.

Can anybody tell me the species?

Thank you!

Could it be Neoscona Crucifera?
I did a little research and the closest match I found was Neoscona crucifera. However, the geographic distribution does not seem to match. Any spider expert here care to give some input? Thank you!

Definately Orb Weavers... not
Definately Orb Weavers... not sure exactly what type...
