Angel insects - Zorotypus

Angel insects - Zorotypus
Ft. Myer, Arlington County, Virginia, USA
April 17, 2013
Size: 2-3mm
The elusive Zoraptera... I've finally seen them! Michael Skvarla and I collected dozens of these during a survey of the George Washington Memorial Parkway with the National Park Service. They were collected under bark of an old fallen tree and seemed associated with termites and passalids. They were quite abundant, fast, and obviously preferred the more moist, crumbly, passalid/termite frass rather than the dried, loose, saw-dust like shavings of the fallen tree.

Sorry for the terrible quality of the photographs. They were taken with my iPhone held to the microscope eyepiece... and these buggers are fast! I may take better images of preserved specimens later.
