Caterpillar - Spodoptera latifascia

Caterpillar - Spodoptera latifascia
The Woodlands, Montgomery County, Texas, USA
September 9, 2006
Could this caterpillar be a later instar of the one we posted last week? The stripes, and especially the pattern on the face look very similar to me. We would really appreciate any insight, or help with ID. Thanks!

this guy is smooth-skinned, the other has long hairs.
The white spot on the thorax is a Tachinid egg. It will hatch into a maggot that will eat the entire inside of this cat. It will never make it to a moth unless the egg is removed.
