ID for a fly? - Orthonevra - Male
Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
April 21, 2013
This rather fascinating-looking fly was perched on stems of grass-like vegetation that had flopped over into the water at a small lake at the Claremont Colleges' Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station. The picture is a bit blurry as I couldn't lean over any closer without falling headfirst into the lake! But I hope someone can provide at least a partial identity. Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Something in Orthonevra, I suspect

The experts will be able to say for sure.

Agreed!
Aha, I just had come up with the same idea before I saw your comment! I was comparing it to this photo of Orthonevra flukei taken by Ron Hemberger in nearby Orange County:

It looks like the same pattern on the eyes, and the habitat and behavior were just like what he described.

Thanks, John!
This is a new taxon for our field station invert list. I hope I see some more so I can get a better photo and perhaps get this to species.
