Species Papilio troilus - Spicebush Swallowtail - Papilio troilus - Female
Wellesley, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
August 5, 2006
I'm sure this is obvious but I didn't find it in my pass through the Guide.

the Flutterby
That is a very lovely shot of a Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes).

Close, but
I believe this is actually a Pipevine Swallowtail - it is missing one spot in the median orange spot-band (third spot in from the abdomen, replaced by a blue smudge). For a comparison of all the look-alikes see the Black Swallowtail info page, and for a Spicebush to compare, see below:

Close again!
It's actually a Spicebush (P. troilus). Spicebush is the one with the missing red spot in the HW submedian. Pipevine only has one row of red spots on HW and would not show obvious spotting on the upperside.

Sorry
I linked to the right picture but wrote the wrong name. I got it right further down in the paragraph, though. D'oh!

Thank you!
Keri, thanks for the quick ID. - Bill
