Tiny insect

Tiny insect
Arlington County, Virginia, USA
September 25, 2004
This tiny insect landed on my newspaper and stuck around for 20 minutes. It was tough to photograph. It twitched its "tail" side to side and up like a scorpion, like in this shot.

Thanks in advance for any ID help.

this tiny insect on this photo (thanks to you John) this is exactly what bites me yesterday and now i am suffering with super itchy, swollen 2 bites from this insect/pest. i thought all the time it was just a tiny mosquito which i feel strange because after it bites me, it is makes my skin swollen so big like half size of my palm and it is warm when i touch it. after a week or two the area or the part of my skin where i got bitten it leaves a dark ring like mark and from time to time is getting itchy. yesterday i saw with my bare eyes how this tiny insect looks like so i get interested in researching what kind of insect it is. but i haven't found until now precautions and treatment after it bites.

any advise or comment will be appreciated.

thanks.

Thrip?
Check the Tree of Life.
My other thought was a male webspinner (order Embioptera), but I'd wager on thrip.

Thrips!
Thrips for sure.

[B.t.w. the singular is thrips... ;) ]
