Found under a rock under trees, they soon assumed their defensive position. I don't know if an ID is possible - I often have thought these are Eleodes armatus, but now I realize it's not so simple....Thank you for any input.

Probably for both. The bottom one looks like it’s probably E. carbonaria chihuahuaensis, the top one is likely either E. carbonaria or E. anthracina. I’ll revist this.
