macro setting on camera
Are you using the Macro setting on your camera? If not, try it. I think the photos will come out much clearer and sharper.

Thank you
for taking time to try to help me. I realize that my photos are often sub-par for BG and I am trying to improve. I use a point & shoot Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V which does not have a controled Macro setting. So, I have to rely on the auto feature and as I understand it, the focal length of the Macro on this camera is a bit limited.
So far, I find photography more challenging than identifying moths. So, I am trying to learn to maximize the use of this camera before "biting off more than I can chew". I have taken some lessons and bought some books. Now I have to practice.
I have a son-in-law who has offered to loan me his "old" DSL and I may take him up on it one day. Unfortunately, you are not the first BG expert to recommend that I improve.
I appreciate the input.
I have enjoyed your many beautiful posts.

Wonder if this article might help?
Using the Manual Focus Ring for Macro Shots on the HX100V and HX200V
. But I think you may have already seen this article. I was surprised to see that there was not "flower" emblem for macro on the camera.
I'm just amazed at the variety and numbers of moths that you find to photograph. It has finally warmed up enough here in Wisconsin for moths to finally start showing up at the lights again. It's been a long winter!

Thank you, thank you
Ilona, I did NOT have that article and will print it off so I can experiment with the advice. Thank you for the compliment on my moths. You certainly have numbers and variety too. I am VERY fortunate to have three different "homes" where I can photograph in my own back yard. I keep a list of "crossovers" and "uniques" at each place. Houston is SOOOO slow - very few moths and mostly tiny ones. I have been confined to Houston - unusual - for about 8 moths because my daughter had a dangerous pregnancy and I had some health issued to take care of. All is well now. Leaving for the ranch tomorrow so I will have lots of good moths to experiment on. However, it is supposed to be 34 degrees on Friday night! We have had a very cool spring.

Gulf Coast Moths
Last year, I had record numbers of moths during March and April ... more than during the summer. I think that was because of the unseasonably warm winter that year. This year was even warmer, with only a few days below freezing. Everybody's commenting about not seeing many moths. I'm wondering if warming is having an effect on their cycles.

'
Robert,
I am such a newbee that I really have no reference. I have just had almost no moths here in Houston since I started "Mothing". I attributed it - possibly - to spraying for mosquitoes in the area since I have lots of moths in Schulenburg and Camp Wood. Bruce remarked that he saw very few - comparatively - moths at the ranch the last time he was there. I will get to see for myself soon. Even at thr ranch I have had ebbs and flows in numbers and moths of interest.
