Carolina Wolf Spider??? - Schizocosa

Carolina Wolf Spider??? - Schizocosa
Waterloo, Monroe County, Illinois, USA
May 1, 2013
Size: 3/8 -1/2"
Planting in the garden...the struggle of two spiders locked in battle caught my eye...they were locked together in a ball and rolling violently back and forth. I ran to get the camera and the struggle was over when I got back. I couldn't tell what the losing spider was. I am guessing this is a young wolf spider. It has some resemblance to Hogna carolinensis.

not Carolina Wolf Spider
I'm not sure what it is though. Maybe Schizocosa?

?
When looking through, I wrote down Hogna c. and Schizocosa M. as the closest possibilities to match the pattern on the abdomen and cephalothorax. While none seemed to be a perfect match, a few pics of the Carolina seemed closest. It is small for a Wolf Spider...do you think it is likely a juvenile? There are lots of them around on the garden dirt...different patterns and most are slightly smaller than this guy. As always, thanks for your help.

Yes
I think it's very likely that it's a juvenile which would make IDing much more difficult. Geez it's hard enough with the adults! =] Keep photographing them through the season and maybe we'll figure it out. You could also get some close-ups of the ventral side so we can verify if they are mature or not.
