Southern Dogface - Zerene cesonia - Female
32.1306, -97.8593, Somervell County, Texas, USA
April 25, 2013
Size: 5 cm
Was actively flying, around various cactus, shrubs, trees. Then suddenly landed. Once down it did not flush even when approached with 3 feet. Perhaps was into roost mode.

It is noticeably greenish as seen by comparison to prickly pear cactus on which it is perched. The color matches so well and view was obscured in most directions by cactus paddles. Even though I had seen it disappear from view a few feet from me, and not emerge, it took careful searching to find it. I have included two images to show this, in case the editors are in a good mood. The image that shows upper fore wing marking above and below was taken in flight, just before it landed. It's a bit soft on focus but in the the two perched images the forewing is mostly hidden.

It is gripping the ephemeral leaves on a newly growing "paddle". They will fall away as the glochids grow.
