Firefly Mimic - Hoplitimyia constans

Yesterday fortune (or misfortune) smiled on me. I found one of the flies that had just been killed by a crab spider. After intense negotiations the spider chose to donate his prey in the interest of science. Both dorsal and ventral views show selective reflective characteristics.

This is a cool feature of some Strats. I have seen some Sargus like species doing this in Madagascar (only the males) and Nemotelus argentatus (only the male) in Europe. There are even some Syrphids (Eumerus) which have such an abdomen, but it is rare and always great to see...
