Whitefly? - Tetraleurodes mori

Whitefly? - Tetraleurodes mori
Herndon, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
September 4, 2006
Size: 1mm-ish
Is this a whitefly? Seems to be kind of fancy markings for one - I thought they were all white. It was whitefly size, though.

Moved from Giant Whitefly.

Thank you!
But is it really Aleurodicus dugesii, or is it Tetraleurodes mori?

that i cannot answer --
i only pointed out a source of potential controversy :-]

Aleurodicus dugesii
This is the giant whitefly, according to www.bugwood.org, a Web site that specializes in insects damaging plants. The zigzag wing markings are unusual for a whitefly.

this sp. is shown as 'mulberry whitefly'
(Tetraleurodes mori) in Cranshaw's Garden Insects of N.America, p. 287-H. (BTW, bugwood.org is plagued with misidentified pics)

Between the two species menti
Between the two species mentioned I would have to go with Tetraleurodes mori. The size alone rules out Giant Whitefly (its not called "Giant" for nothing). Also the locality seems too far north for Giant Whitefly.

Thank you!
I would move it, but there doesn't appear to be a section for that.

Thank you.
I'll have to go through my other photos to see if there are more with the zigzags.

Yes.
Definitely a whitefly. Any idea what plant it was on? Often that information helps get a more specific ID.

It was on a small lilac tree
which leans directly over holly and is pretty close to azaleas as well. Does that help?
