I noticed this strange striped egg case perched upon one of the many flowers. I went to tilt it to take a photo only to realize the caterpillar was still attached to the stem below the flower head!

Dr. David Adamski of the Systematic Entomology Lab suggests that the caterpillar is this species:

Of the species that are recorded from Estigmene acrea on Taxapad, there are two that are potential candidates as makers of the cocoon, Hyposoter rivalis and Casinaria genuina.
