Viceroy - Limenitis archippus

Viceroy - Limenitis archippus
32.1306, -97.8593, Somervell County, Texas, USA
May 7, 2013
No previous Texas-May. And first time. I had not noticed a Viceroy in the 12 years I have been here.

This one tried to fool me. We are into the normal period for the gen 1 Monarch bloom. Had normal overwintering returnee volume, but no gen 1 yet. Everything is late this year due to cold weather. When I saw it fly by I thought it might be the first gen 1. Big, Color looked correct. And it flew like a Monarch, gliding on wind. But up close clearly a Viceroy.
