Southern Carpenter Bee - Xylocopa micans - female

Southern Carpenter Bee - Xylocopa micans - Female
Tybee Island, Chatham County, Georgia, USA
September 20, 2004
Dark colored bee, I think, about bumblebee sized. Photographed in a park about 1/4 mile from the beach.

Moved to guide--X. micans
Mike, I moved this to the guide for Xylocopa micans. I'm relatively (!) sure that's what this is. See the guide page for details on identification.

Carpenter Bee--Xylocopa micans?
To my unpracticed eye, it looks like a Carpenter bee. All large eastern carpenter bees are in genus Xylocopa. X. virginica I know well. If this is a Xylocopa, it must be X. micans, the only other eastern species in the genus.
See Discover Life page--female X. micans looks close. Also see Univ. Florida.

The flower is Painted Leaf, Poinsettia heterophylla. It has those neat red patches on the leaves to highlight the flowers--those are actually small and not brightly colored.
