UCB- Unidentified Crawling Beetle

I found a black beetle under a flat slab of sandstone with flattened grade and dirt under it in Golden Valley County, Montana. It was all black, maybe a quarter to two thirds of an inch long. I found it next to some pill bugs. What is it?

You can browse through the Carabidae
here and see if you find something like your beetle. That may at least get you to family.

In Montana I would also check Tenebrionidae. Both Carabidae and Tenebs are commonly found in that habitat. Unfortunately they are both very big families. If you could post even the crudest cell phone picture of something that large someone would tell you the family 95% of the time.

The fact is you did describe thousands (or maybe hundreds if we narrow it to Montana) of beetles and nobody will ever be able to identify it beyond "beetle" from a vague description. Not rude, just fact.

Nobody knows what it is. You just described about 5,000 kinds of beetle. You need to post a decent picture in the ID request portion of the site in order for anyone to identify it.
