Potential Paranthrene simulans - Paranthrene simulans

Potential Paranthrene simulans - Paranthrene simulans
Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia, USA
May 5, 2013
Size: 23mm
I am thinking that this is a hornet clearwing, Paranthrene simulans, but since I know the clearwings can be tricky, I thought that I'd let the id be confirmed first. That species looked to be the most similar when I looked at the Sesiidae section of the plates on Moth Photographer's Group.

If confirmed, here's a Georgia record for you for this species.

Also of interest is that despite its common name here of hornet clearwing, both my husband and I (both Entomologists) at first glance thought that his was a queen southern yellow jacket, Vespula squamosa since the coloring is very similar. I had photographed one previously (the photo is in this guide) and when my husband called me over to photograph the "yellow jacket queen" after a moment I realized that something was different with how it looked. Then I noticed that it was "fuzzy" and that the mouthparts were not right and figured it out that this was a clearwing. Exciting since I'd never seen this species before.
