Size: est. 9mm
Some yellow at base of wings; I believe there was some purple irridescence on the abdomen. I have no idea which family this might be.

Once again, good going Stuart!
A new species for Bug Guide.

Thanks very much for your help with this one, Ron.

Great find, new to BG and a rare species!

Just a guess - something around Paragus.
Seems a bit large, though.

Thanks, Ron.
Paragus seems to have distinctively shaped eyes with two rows of hairs which I don't see on this fly. Also, the yellowish coloring at the very base of the wings seemed pronounced. Do you think there is a chance that this isn't even a syrphid?

I'm not certain this is a syrphid, either.
There's a wing vein test, and it's described somewhere at BG, probably on the syrphid info page. Look for details on spurious vein, Stuart.

OK, Ron.
I've heard about this spurious vein many times so finally took the time to learn where it is. I checked this fly - and it does have the spurious vein. It's most obvious on the right wing of the middle image. So at least we're in the right family!
