Lynette...
Thanks. Have you seen the images that I think are Tigrosa g. ? I'm curious to know what you think. You have some very nice pictures by the way. :)

Shizocosa mccooki...?
Far from the range of what is represented by the data on this site...but it is the closest match to the markings on this spider that I could find. Also closely resembles S. avida, I see on the genus info page that both species are listed for IL...hopefully the yellow patch on the ventral shot will be helpful.

Shizocosa IL
Assuming it's Shizocosa, range suggests it might be S. ocreata, S. saltatrix, S. duplex, S. avida, S. crassipalpata, S. bilineata, S. aulonia, S. mccooki, S. retrorsa.
Of those I found reference of a yellow venter on
S. crassipes - venter yellow, sparsely spotted with brown
S. saltatrix - venter dull red to orange-yellow usually finely spotted with black or brown
S. bilineata - Venter dull yellow, with 2 pairs of dark longitudinal bands posterior to genital groove
S. aulonia - Venter pale orange-yellow.
S. crassipalpata - Venter dull yellow, with 2 pairs of indistinct longitudinal bands posterior to genital groove
S. retrorsa - Venter black, occasionally with pale spot at middle
S. avida - Venter yellow to pale red-brown, often with narrow black lines along lateral margins and dull red mid-stripe
S. mccooki - Venter usually with extensive black areas, sometimes with lateral black bands, I or 2 pale spots on a black background, or no black areas
Similar venter here

thanks...
Could you recommend a good book to reference for identifying spiders...I can't find anything good in a brick and mortar store and would rather not buy from online without first seeing the book or having it recommended. I have taken shots of several other individuals with the same yellow marking, I wouldn,t call it dull yellow.

Spider Book - Yellow venter
The best books for ID at this level are actually the PDFs available online. However, many of them are not available for free. The free ones can usually be found using
this link
. If you look up Schizocosa you'll find that one available reference is
Gertch & Wallace 1937
. The one I used for the info above doesn't appear to be available for free.
