Fly - Merodon equestris

Fly - Merodon equestris
Beavercreek, Greene County, Ohio, USA
May 12, 2013
This fly was very interested in the wood chip mulch in my raspberry bed, and appeared (in next photo) to be ovipositing in it.

it's Merodon equestris' time
...across the continent

Thank you
for the ID, v belov. So this is the same species as these photos of mine ID'd on bugguide previously:

even though the coloration is considerably different (and the color is stated to be variable under the info tab).

Do the larvae eat anything besides Narcissus bulbs? I have many Narcissus in my yard, but there are none within 30 feet of where this fly appeared to be ovipositing.
