Four-striped Leaftail -
Phyllogomphoides stigmatus

Semi-side view . . . the best I could get under the circumstances. The background was not very good and this one was a bit timid and only hung around for a few photos.

Looks like a female
Maybe the same species? I am pretty certain it is not a spinyleg, but beyond that I am not much help. I have no real experience with ringtails, leaftails, etc. I looked at a bunch of images today and was never really comfortable assigning a species or even a genus to these bugs. My books can only take me so far. I would suggest going to
this site
and sending these photos to one of the Texas ode guys like Martin Reid and see what they think. Let me know if you get a positive ID on them.

Thanks again Cliff
After wrestling with rebuilding my PC and data recovery, I think I finally have everything back up and running again.
I think you're right about being a Ringtail or maybe a Leaftail. After looking through the images of both on the site you linked, I think it's either a Phyllogomphoides stigmatus or as you suggested, a Erpetogomphus designatus.
I sent a couple of photos to them and will surely let you know if and when I get a reply.
Thanks again for your time and efforts.

That was fast
Already receive a reply . . .

From: John C. Abbott
Hi Gary,
Welcome to the world of dragonflies! Looks like you have a four-striped leaftail (P. stigmatus) to me.
John

Looks like we have a positive ID on this one, so I'll move these images to the guide page and unlink them since they are likely not the exact same specimen.
Thanks again
GD

That's good news
So John confirmed the male specimen as P. stigmatus also? It is interesting that the "leafiness" of the abdomen is not visible in the top view of the male. Anyway, I am glad my suggestion worked. Maybe we can convince John to become a regular on BugGuide!

Not sure about the male/female part
Sure thing . . . thanks again for the lead and advise.
As you can see from his reply, he didn't mention any thing as far as the sex, only the species. I guess I should have mentioned to him I wasn't sure about that part either. I did send him images of both the ones I posted here. By his response I assumed he meant that both were the same species and he must have figured I already had the gender part figured out?
Indeed that would be cool if he would frequent this site and offer his expertise here as well. I did provide him with a link to my images here and also some others I have posted on deviantART.com of some shots that I don't have on here for various reason. (mainly the ones that don't need to be included in the guide pages here) Hoping to get him to come over and have a look. Also offering my images in case he needs any for any reason. Ya never know when someone has a blank spot that needs a pic ;)
Dragonfly & Butterfly Photography
I have a total of 56 insect images there along with some other photos and some of my art that's not on my web site yet.
