Spider ID Request - Hogna carolinensis

Spider ID Request - Hogna carolinensis
Camp Wood, Edwards County, Texas, USA
May 29, 2013
Size: 60 mm
I took a picture of the spider with an object of known size, so I think the size is fairly correct foot tip to foot tip. I am always wrong about spiders, but I thought this looked like a Prowling Spider Miturgidae. Possibly Syspira because some of them had very large heads and small abdomens. However, I could not find a match for the patterns on this spider.

Moved from Wolf Spiders.
I still don't know what the deal is with the different ventrals. I suppose I'll keep filing them here so that they're all in one place if we ever figure it out.

Moved
Moved from ID Request. Nice shot. This one might be Hogna or Geolycosa. I'm leaning toward Hogna. A ventral view of these is very helpful.

Hogna carolinensis?

Thank you very much for looking for this one. It surely looks like a match!! Should I move it?

Hold off for the moment....
there's some question about the placement of some of them right now. They're typically thought of as having a solid black ventral, the one I linked to for comparison doesn't as do a couple others filed there. It might be a natural variation or another species. I'm going ask around and see what I can find out about it before filing any more in there.

Thank you Lynette. He was big and very quick. I am not brave enough to catch these and try for a ventral.

Thanks for the help. The last spider I posted was a Wolf Spider. Will have to study them more carefully. "Prowling" was what it looked like it was doing! Hopefully I will become more "Spider Knowledgable" with all this help.
