Bright-spotted butterfly - Strymon melinus - Male
Herndon, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
September 16, 2006
Size: about 3/4"
Saw this on my neighbor's hibiscus. I haven't seen one like this before. Who is it?

Moved
Moved from Butterflies.

normally they don't open wings much
Cliff is right! Usually there hairstreaks don't open the wings much when perched and when they do not as wide open as yours. This is a common species, just have to look vlosely for them.

Thanks to you both!
It sat there for a while just like this, till I started messing with it, sticking a ruler beside it - then it closed its wings, and a few seconds later took off.
