Tiphiid Wasp? - Philanthus

Tiphiid Wasp? - Philanthus
Seattle, King County, Washington, USA
July 16, 2006
This year was the first time I've noticed this wasp. I'm sorry I don't have a size. They were feeding at daisy relatives (Compositae) and my fennel plant. They didn't seem to care that I was around.
Thanks,
Cheryl M.

i could very easily be wrong... but it looks like something in the Subfamily Philanthinae, you will have to wait to see if someone can confirm my "looks like" or tell you which genus it might be in said subfamily.

Confirmed.
Genus is Philanthus, good call Edward!

Bee Wolf
On reading your guide page, I noticed that some specialize in Halictid bees. We have, in King County, a green metallic bee that I have not yet posted photos of. They are very common. Until 2 years ago, we had a honeybee nest in our chimney that had to be removed so some roof work could be done. The beekeeper that removed them said the hive looked about 30 years old, at least! More on that story when I post honey bees for Washington (If there's a lack of photos from that area)

this probably takes Halictid bees. i do not know if we have any native bee wolfs that take honey bees, as honey bees are not native.
