red-brown ground beetle - Clivina impressefrons

red-brown ground beetle - Clivina impressefrons
Organ Mountains foothills, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, USA
August 6, 2006
Size: about 6 mm
I collected one of these at each of my two UV light setup locations. This species has the unfortunate practice of adopting a front elbows-forward position in rigor mortis, making it difficult to get entirely in the focal plane of my lens. Trying to flatten this specimen I succeeded in breaking off the front legs. I would much preferred to have photographed the Clivina alive but, as with so many of my UV light specimens, the jumble of outgassing carabids in my live collecting bottle caused a substantial die-off. The dead had the advantage of not moving but it was not a satisfactory tradeoff.

IDed from specimens in arthropod collection at NMSU, where this and most of my specimes now reside.
