I think there is a good chance that this individual is actually the similar Sphinx gordius. The forewing "fringe" on this one is very dark, a characteristic often seen in gordius while poecila has a more checkered fringe with clear alterations between white and dark. However, I do not know how reliable this characteristic is, particularly in New England, where both species can be found.

EDIT: This may actually be S. poecila.

 
I think poecila is correct
There is no fringe left on this moth; the dark line visible at the edge of the wing is the terminal line, which is black in both species. In gordius, the subterminal area is darker than the remainder of the FW. In this moth, the subterminal area is the same color as the rest of the wing, a characteristic of poecila.
