the spots and the spike remind me of a sphinx but i'm unsure what kind.

Wow, so skinny and so shiny!
I searched sphinxes in Wagner in vain, then I remembered there's a caterpillar called False-sphinx, Pheosia rimosa, which fits this nicely. Yours matches Wagner's picture very well. Here's one from the guide:
