What's the plant?
Aphids are host-specific. We don't have many identified to species, but if we ever get an aphid expert, host plant details might help.

idea. I will go back and take a picture. I think it was a tree.

As others have commented on the whole-plant photo, this is a willow (Salix), possibly Carolina willow (S. caroliniana).
