I wasn't aware of any birch near where this was photographed but obviously there must have been some. Where I now live (2016 on), there is river birch.

no sure
River birch is the only species in western Tennessee making bordeloni more likely, though both species feed on river birch. All your moths look more like bordeloni except for this one which seems to fit ferruginea better. My impression form emails with Dave Wagner, the appearance should not be a over weighted. I think that all you moths are probably bordeloni. Maybe they should be moved to genus. I'll leave it to you.

Edit - looking at the BIN, I see bordeloni can get pretty dark like this one. I'll still leave it to you but I'm leaning further toward bordeloni. Maybe you could get some of these dissected or barcoded. Your current location will likely have the same species if you get them at all. I think you can brush the tails and examine/photograph the tip. If you want, I can send you the relevant info.

8th Sternite
You can brush the tails of males and examine the 8th sternite which will have the posterior margin with a larger mesial process bracketed by deeper notches in bordeloni. It should be pretty obvious. I'll send the info.

For now I'll move them to bordeloni and please do send me the info.
