Assassin? Leaf-footed? on Yarrow -
Leptoglossus occidentalis
York, city garden, York County, Pennsylvania, USA
September 18, 2006
Size: about an inch
I thought from the shape of its body and it's head that it was some sort of Assassin bug. Please please educate me! :)

Western Conifer Seed Bug
Leptoglossus occidentalis (below). Despite the name, it's almost all over the northern US. There are other Leptoglossus spp. around, but I think I have the species right on this one. - see
guide page
for others.
Assassin bugs
are somewhat similar in shape but have shorter thicker beaks for stabbing prey.
Leaf-footed bugs
like this have a long mouthpart for sucking plant juices.

Cool!
Oh wow Hannah, thanks so much! And that makes perfect sense...we've got a big Eastern Hemlock tree in the yard.
*off to do more research*
I've got this photo posted on Flickr as well and I gave you full credit for the ID :)
Woo hoo I love learning about new bugs (and plants and flowers and birds and trees *grin*)
