Giant bee or fly - Cimbex americanus

Giant bee or fly - Cimbex americanus
Oldtown, Bonner County, Idaho, USA
June 9, 2013
Size: over an inch
This huge bee or fly was crawling on my seedlings, and I wondered what it is. If it were much smaller, I might have thought it was a yellow jacket or hornet, but it is at least as big as a large bumblebee, and has a flatter abdomen than a bumblebee, longer wings than a bumblebee, and no fuzz at all, so it's not a bumblebee. I'd say it's about 1 and 1/4 inches or so long.
