Great Brown Autumn Sedge? - Pycnopsyche

Great Brown Autumn Sedge? - Pycnopsyche
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
September 19, 2006
Size: 20 mm
This looks like the illustration of Great Brown Autumn Sedge, Pycnopsyche guttifer, in the Caddisfly Handbook by Pobst and Richards. Attracted to lights.

Thanks, everyone.
This is the first time I've used this site and the identifications came so quickly. Wow!!

I speculated on P. guttifer also
in the photo here but haven't found any more info since then. If it's Pycnopsyche, there's 17 species to choose from at nearctica.com.

Caddisflies with this color, pattern, and size are common around our place in September and early October, so it would be nice to get a positive ID.

Hi Robin,

There is an illustration of a caddisfly very similar to this in "Insects, Their Natural History and Diversity" by Stephen Marshall, which is identified to genus as Pycnopsyche.

I wish we could find someone to identify caddisflies, as I get many species here (being close to the Ottawa River), and it would be interesting to know what they are.

I think it's safe to say...
that this is a Pycnopsyche species, based on the illustrations you've seen in two books, the photo I linked to earlier, and info added to the Guide.

Image moved from ID Request to new genus page.

I think it's safe to say...
Thanks, Robin.
