Disonycha, perhaps?
Pronotal shape looks like Disonycha, perhaps. Two species illustrated in Dillon, plate LXXII, look similar, but not exactly the same pattern.
Big group, rather tough. Might be helpful to know plant associate.
Checklist of Florida Beetles
--might be helpful, gives some plant associates. If it's Disonycha (if!), there aren't too many possibilities. D. conjugata, for instance, is listed on Polygonum (knotweed). Is that the plant it was on? Hard for me to see.
Again, a way to generate some plausible ideas, then do more searches, see if an image pops up.
Disonycha fumata
from Texas looks close, though not identical. It is on the Florida checklist. listed for southern US.

I believe I have found a good match for this one
and it is Disonycha fumata. Compare third image on
this website
(which, incidentally, is Herschel Raney's). So, you were right!
