Id help needed. - Dolichovespula maculata
Burton Wetlands Park, Geauga County, Ohio, USA
June 5, 2013
Hornet nest. Opening at bottom of "neck". Tried to get hornet out for picture. Hornet came out and then went right back in (did not show any aggression ). Hornet was black with white markings. 2' off ground maybe 4" - 5" in length. Is the the beginning of a bald faced hornet nest ? Thanks for the help in advance.

Dolichovespula maculata
This is a young nest of Dolichovespula maculata. Young nests of this species are distinct among North American Vespine wasps as they possess a tube or "beak" at the bottom of the nest which serves as an entrance. This tube is later removed by the first workers of the season. The European sister species D. media also constructs a similar tube.

potter wasp maybe
There are a group of wasps called potter wasps (formerly Eumenidae). I would browse some photos there and see if that is the wasp you saw. These ladies are awesome and do a great job cleaning up caterpillars and spiders.
