Size: ~10mm
perhaps Sparnopolius confusus or lherminierii

Sparnopolius lherminierii seems to be the answer, after looking through the Bombyliidae at the university museum

Bombylid
This may be a Geron species. And I thought we had only one in the east but I see we have about ten. May even be a male. One of the Bomb experts may comment.

bee fly
i am not sure about it being in the genus Geron, it crossed my mind, but i can not say i know enough(or anything) about bee flies, so i did not commit to a genus. i did want to say it looked to be a male. so, i did not know we had that many species in that genus here in the east... i know i have found at least one Geron species, which i posted a while back. anywho, good to know, and thank you for the information Herschel.
