California oak moth without antenna? - Phryganidia californica

California oak moth without antenna? - Phryganidia californica
Elkhorn Slough Reserve, Monterey County, California, USA

This is just one of a large "flock" of California oak moths (Phryganidia californica). I saw mostly males, a few females, and then this one with the big head, big eyes, and no antenna. What's the story? It's a strange one.

it appears the caterpillar head
capsule somehow is attached to the poor thing so it did not eclose properly..sorta gross and sad. I noticed several odd eclosions with some I reared most notably they have huge difficulty getting out of the pupal container thing..but nothing this odd. it makes me wonder if its head is in there and is okay or if it is grossly malformed.
