Ichneumonidae - Grotea anguina - female

Ichneumonidae - Grotea anguina - Female
Beavercreek, Greene County, Ohio, USA
June 1, 2013
Photographed on a dead cane of Rosa rugosa 'Wildberry breeze'. This wasp was very interested in the hollow stem, then moved down the cane and inserted its ovipositor, and repeated this sequence on the same cane. I don't know if it is relevant, but my 8 year old daughter told me she had seen a small bee or wasp enter the same hollow stem earlier.

Thank you
for the ID, Bob. Apparently my daughter's observation was relevant, as according to the info tab this is a parasitoid of Ceratina spp. Not very surprising that at a quick glance my daughter could not tell if the Small Carpenter Bee entering the hollow dead rose cane were a bee or a wasp.

Yes
The only known hosts are three species of Ceratina, as indicated here.
